The History of Smeg
Did you know that Cape Demo Appliances is an official, approved Smeg factory outlet? And proudly so! The Smeg range of kitchen appliances is sought-after by those of discerning taste. We share a little bit of the history behind the world-famous brand.
Vittorio Bertazzoni Snr found the company, originally specialising in enamelling and metalwork, in 1948 in a small Italian town, Guastalla, near Reggio Emilia in northern Italy. Today the design and manufacture of Smeg appliances is concentrated in three factories in Italy and operates in 19 countries around the world, including South Africa.
Smeg Milestones:
1956 – the launch of the first gas range featuring automatic ignition, safety valves in the oven and a cooking programmer.
1960 – introduction of the first Smeg dishwashers
1970 – launch of high-performance hobs and ovens
1990 – introduction of distinctive sinks and hoods
1997 – launch of the provocative FAB range with its retro-style indicative of the 1050’s
Today, Smeg is run by the third generation of Bertazzoni entrepreneurs, but it still keeps the memory of its beginnings alive in its Italian name:Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, or the “Guastalla Emilia Enamel Works”.
